How do YOU express the fitness you have worked so hard to improve at CrossFit 424? Needless to say, there are many avenues through which we can apply and utilize our fitness. As we have talked about the CrossFit“Theoretical Hierarchy of Athletic Development” we noted that Sport is at the top of the pyramid. No question that typical sports are way for us to express our fitness. However, there are a myriad of ways that our fitness can be put to use. For example, one of my favorite ways to use my fitness is sawing and splitting firewood. I had the privilege of doing a bit of that this morning. Yes, Jacque Warwick Sanders I wore my flannel shirt!
Can you list the ways that functional fitness obtained through CrossFit were applied for me this morning? Here are a few to get you started: grip strength (holding the saw and splitting ax), mid-line stability, muscular endurance, power, core-to-extremity (swinging the splitting ax), violent extension of the hips, balance (swinging the ax on uneven terrain), etc.
I believe that the fitness we improve through CrossFit should not be viewed as the “end”. It is a means to an end. This “end” is probably different for all of us, but we should all look to apply this fitness as best we can. Examples might be that you want to have the physical and mental strength to care for your children or aging parents, your job requires you to be on your feet and/or moving all day, you need to manage stressors that life is throwing at you, you want to perform well in a sport, you want to fight off chronic disease, or maybe you want to be the world’s best exerciser. Regardless of the “end”, use the fitness you have busted your ass for to pursue it!
